August 24-28

Welcome to week 3!! We are well on our way through our first month of school.  Most of the students are adjusting well. We are working on making an easy transition in subjects and learning study skills.  Our first Social Studies test will be on Wednesday and I am doing my best to work with the students in class to ensure their success.

The homework folders seem to be going well. Thank you for being consistent in signing the planners.  Also if you write a note please let your child know so they can remind me to read it.

Our class will be in charge of the school mass on Sept. 8th.  If your child has a reading or part in the mass please read over their part with them.  I will send home the readings on Wednesday or Thursday.

GREAT WORK!! A big thank you for the continued support with the coupons.  We are now up to 36 items.  Keep the coupons coming!!  Remember toiletry coupons are recommended.

Pictures will be on Tuesday and Wednesday. I am not sure what day we will have pictures but usually we are on the first day.

Thursday, August 20

Today was our first day of writing study questions for our Social Studies test which will be on Wednesday, August 26th. The students have written down 5 vocab words along with 3 complete answer questions.  We were able to look up most of the vocab words.  The students are to finish completing the words along with looking up the answers to the 3 questions on the bottom of study guide.  DO NOT TEAR STUDY GUIDE OUT SPIRAL NOTEBOOK.  If you would like to make study cards or flash cards please feel free to do so but do not tear page out of spiral notebook.  I will go over the questions tomorrow and following days leading up to the test.  I will do this each time we have a Social Studies or Science test.  I will go over the complete test in class along with the multiple choice questions.  I have found that by introducing students to the study guide they are better able to learn study skills that will help them in the future.  If you have had a child in my class before maybe you can answer any questions for the new parents.  Thank you

ALSO WE WILL NOT HAVE A VOCAB TEST TOMORROW.  I DID NOT RETURN THE WORDS ON TUESDAY SO THE ONLY TEST WILL BE ON THE BACK OF THE ASSESSMENT FOR THE READING TEST ALONG WITH OUR SPELLING TEST.

Thank you and I hope this clarifies any questions as far as testing for Social Studies and Science.

Have a good evening.

August 17-21

Whew!! Well we made it through our first week of school and I will say overall we had a very nice week.  Thank you for making the week run as smooth as possible.

We went through most subjects last week and some students seemed to have some difficulty with transitioning.  I tried to remind them it will get a little easier as time goes on.  This week we will be adding English and Science to our studies.

Since our school motto is "Compassion in Action" we were really focusing on how to treat others in and out of class.  I will continue to go over classroom rules and the way the students socially interact with others.  I am a big fan of working as a team and I will remind the students regularly that God wants us to love others.

In the homework folder there was a paper about our class community project.  If you did not see it please review the letter.  We will be collecting toiletry coupons regularly to help with Mrs. Lorenzi who purchases the products with the coupons and give the items to our local agencies for those in need.  If you collect the coupons please turn them in right away. No need to save them up as they may expire.

I would like to talk briefly about homework.  I feel that I do not give a lot of homework and what I do assign helps the child's learning.  For example if a child writes all of their spelling words correctly on each homework assignment chances are they will receive a higher grade than those who speed through the spelling homework and write the words incorrectly.  As a parent I would encourage you to check your child's spelling homework to be sure they have spelled the words correctly and written neatly.  Also please be sure your child has their name, date and subject

The students did a nice job with the homework folder last week.  The green paper will be stared by me or highlighted depending on if there work was turn in and complete.  The star or check amounts as credit.  Highlighted means it was not turned in. If you have any questions please let me know.

Our class has began PE or Physical Education.  This will be on Tues from 1:15-1:45,and Thurs and Fri from 12:45-1:15. I know that it was a hot week and it looks like the heat will probably continue.  I have reminded students that they may bring water bottles and leave them in the back of the class along with staying hydrated during the day.  The girls are allowed to take off their jumpers as long as their shorts are arms length when they place their arms by their side.  I would encourage boys to wear shorts.  PE is a grade so I stress to students that if they can play full speed at recess then their is no excuse when it comes to PE time unless their is a health issue.  If the students shows any kind of heat stress we will handle all means necessary to ensure the health of your child.

If your child has a hand held pencil sharpener I would like them to bring it to school.  I know that the list said not to bring one but I have a lot of students using class time to sharpen pencils.  Also the electric sharpener is not for colored pencils.  Thank you

Their will be a Safe Environment meeting this week at 7 am for those parents who are not able to make a night meeting.  Again all parents must be fingerprinted and Safe environment trained if you are intending on attending any 3rd grade field trip or volunteering in our class.  This is the Diocese policy.

Open house will be on Sunday, August 30th.  Please mark your calendar to come and see your students work.  It will be from 11am to 1pm.

Subjects:
English - Chapter 1 - we will be focusing on sentence structure
Reading and Spelling - Lon Po Po Tests on Friday along with Vocabulary
Math - Chapter 1 place value, comparing numbers, rounding
Social Studies - Chapter 1 - We will be finishing our chapter this week which means we will have our first test next Tuesday.  I will give the students a study guide that they will write in their spiral notebook on Wednesday or Thursday.  The students will write the questions and they are expected to come back the following day with answers so we can study in class.
Science - Beginning Chapter 1 Plants
Religion - We are finishing chapter 1 and will have an open book test on Wednesday.  Please encourage your child to take their book home to study with you.

Thank you for all of your support and if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to ask.  God Bless.

August 10, 2015

Please read the previous Blog if you have not done so already. :-)

Whew!!!  We survived the first day of school. Your child should have came home with a planner and a homework folder.  Please sign necessary papers in the homework folder and return them tomorrow. This is their only homework tonight.  Tomorrow they will have spelling, reading, a math page and Vocabulary. We will finish most of the vocabulary in class.

Please stress to your child how important it is to be respectful and kind to all students.

Our school Motto this year is "Compassion in Action." We discussed how to be good classmates today and did a lot of role play so the students understand how to be a good friend.  We will continue to work on Social interaction all week along with school rules.

Many students brought all their school supplies to school.  If there were duplicates your child can take them home until they are needed.  They will need 3 spiral notebooks to begin the school year.  Thank you for all of the helpers this morning covering books.

The safe environment meeting will be on Wednesday at 6pm.  This will be the first meeting.  If you are unable to make it please be sure to attend one of the following meetings.

AUGUST 10-14

WELCOME BACK!!!

Tomorrow is the first day of school.  Students must wear full uniform.  No shorts are allowed.  Mass will begin at  8:30.  If you are able to attend mass it can be a very nice beginning to your day.

I was very pleased to see many of you at the "Meet The Teacher" night.  It was good to see many of the students with smiles on their faces and some eager for school to begin.  We have a few new students in our class that we will want to feel welcome to OLM school along with their parents.  Please reach out in any way possible to make all feel welcome.  It is an important goal of mine to be sure students are respectful to one another along with many everyone feel welcome and involved.  I am sure you have also heard Parents are the Primary Educators.  With all of us working together as a team we can help your child in succeeding.

First day of school
 - Label all school items if you have not already done so
 - we will cover all school books after we return from mass.  If a few parents would like to stay it is greatly appreciated.  It will take about 20 min.
- Please remind your child they are to be as well behaved as they possibly can at mass
- There will be no extended care the first day of school and dismissal is 12:30.
- Tuesday - Friday dismissal is at 2:30
- BRING A CANNED FOOD
- There will be no hot lunch all week.  So please pack your child a cold lunch.

This year as a school we are focusing on COMPASSION IN ACTION.  In doing so all students are encouraged to bring a canned food to Mass.  The food will be donated to local charities.

-As a community service project for our class I have decided that our class will help Mrs. Lorenzi's class in collecting toiletry coupons.  I will send a letter or Blog the instructions.  Thank you

ATTENTION
This is our cycle year of Safe Environment. ALL PARENTS WHO WANT TO VOLUNTEER TO WORK IN THE CLASS, STAY FOR PARTIES, OR ATTEND FIELDTRIPS MUST BE SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINED.  MRS. BLACKBURN WILL BE OFFERING CLASSES IN THE MORNING AND AFTERNOON.  THERE WILL BE  NO EXCUSES AS TO WHY THE CLASS WAS NOT COMPLETED SO PLEASE ATTENDED THE MEETING IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON BEING INVOLVED.  ALSO IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN FINGERPRINTED I AM ENCOURAGING ALL PARENTS WHO ARE INTENDING ON ATTENDING FIELDTRIPS TO DO SO.  THIS WILL LAST THE DURATION OF YOUR CHILD'S OLM SCHOOLING.

Please read the parent/student handbook regarding uniform, grading scale, playground rules, etc.

Please use the Blog as a tool to find out upcoming events along with any materials the students will need for the week.  You will receive a packet the first day of school.  Please sign and return all necessary papers as soon as possible. Be sure to read everything and have your child understand the playground and homework rules.  I am trying something new with the homework.  Your child will receive a homework folder the first day that they must return each day and I will check off if the work is complete.  I am hoping this will help with any problems of late work or no work.  I am also requesting that the correct heading be put on all homework if it is not a worksheet.  This will help to keep everything uniform.

There will be new post on Monday, August 10 discussing school subjects and other information.

This time of year can be overwhelming so I will do my best to communicate as clearly as possible.

IF EVER YOU NEED TO CONTACT ME PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CALL THE SCHOOL OR EMAIL ME samanthablissolm@yahoo.com

May 4-8

Thank you to all of the parents who drove and helped out driving our Farm Safety Day field trip.  The students seemed to have a great day and were well behaved.

We are well on our way through the end of the school year with only 4 weeks of school left.  I am doing my best to explain to students that they really need to be sure and turn all assignments in when they are due.  There is a lot of missing work that is not accounted for so please be sure to check Option C to see how your child is doing.  I do not want anyone to have surprises when the final report card goes out.

Reading and Spelling - We are finishing up My Fathers Dragon.  The students have a green folder with many pages that we have been working on in class.  The book with all the answers will be due Friday, May 8th.  This will be a significant amount of your child's Reading Grade.  Please be sure to remind them that this needs to be complete.

Math - We are finishing up Chapter 7.  We did not do all of the lessons in the chapter because I wanted to move forward next week and work on more curriculum in our book.  The test will be on Monday, May 11th.  The lesson's that will be on the test will be Lesson 2, 3,4, 8, 15 and 16.

SS - We have shared many of our Landmarks and everyone needs to be CONGRATULATED!! I was very excited to see all of the projects and to see how enthused the students were to share their projects.  Some of the projects were displayed in the Library for the school and Grandparents to share last Friday.  Many compliments were given on all the projects.  We will send home the projects Friday after school.  This week we are beginning Chapter 10.

Science - Test extension chapter on animals tomorrow.  We will begin Fossils, Minerals and Rocks on Wednesday.

Religion - We will be discussing the importance of Family and our Faith

Thank you again for all of the constant support.  Please instill in your child that they need to give 100 percent till the end of the school year.  I know it can be difficult so do your best in helping your child succeed.
Thank you and God Bless

Social Studies - We will continue to work on Ch. 9. I have sent home a note today with the details.  The letter is below.  I did not send home the white lined paper.  It will go home tomorrow.

April 13, 2014

Dear Parents,

In our Social Studies Unit we are discussing landmarks in the United States.  The students are very excited about the subject so I wanted to have them do a project about a Landmark.  Your student has chosen a landmark that they are to research and present to the class.

I have enclosed a large white paper with lines.  This paper needs to include a  drawing of the landmark along with 5 important facts.  You may use books or the Internet.  The landmark needs to be hand drawn and full of color.  I always tell the students there should not be any white spaces.  I understand that we are not all artists so they need to do the best that they can.  That is what makes the project original.  The writing needs to be handwritten in the student’s best writing.  I would like the writing to be printed.  In the past I have made student books and I enjoy looking back at these projects.  I am intending on using these book for future reference.

The second part of the project is to make a 2D or 3D landmark that the students will share with the class.  They are to be as creative as they can.  You may use clay, modge podge, beads, toothpicks, playdoh, paper, wood or any other items that will help make the project creative.

The students are extremely excited about this project and in looking at our calendar I want to give you enough time to complete the assignment.   The assignment will be due on Thursday, April 30th giving the students 2 weekends to complete the assignment.

Your child has chosen the landmark ____________________________________________________

It will be a big part of your student’s Social Studies grade.  Any assignments turned in late will be graded accordingly.  I understand that this time of year can be very busy with school, sports and other activities so please starts as soon as you can on this project.  Your child has already been brainstorming different ideas about the project.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Religion - Chapter 13 Follow the Church

Science - We have began a new chapter which will be Ch. 1 in the extension chapter. It is how Living things depend on one another.

Thank you and please feel free to let me know if you have any questions.  God Bless You!!

If you have read the BLOG please have your child write one fact about their landmark project in the social studies column of their planner.  Thank you

March 16-20

This week we will be having conferences from Tuesday thru Friday.  Monday will be a regular day from 8-2:30 and Tuesday thru Friday will be early dismissal at 12:30.

Report cards have went home and need to be signed and returned this week.  Please understand that we are well on our way through the school year.  We only have one quarter left and some students are still having a very difficult time in certain subjects.  Study guides are being sent home and need to be signed.  In doing so you should be taking the time to go over the questions with your child.  We are also doing our part in class to study a few days before the test.  Most students have been improving however their is still a few that will need continual support at home.  Another thing that needs to be addressed is the amount of students who do not put their name on their work.  Beginning this week if they do not put their name they will be sitting out part of their recess and writing their name 20 times to ensure they do not forget the next time.  I know this sounds silly but with 34 students and usually the same students it is very difficult for me to figure out who's paper belongs to who without taking out class time. Late work will also only be accepted if the student has an excused absence or the following day.  Any work that is turned in after the following day will result in a participation grade.  Thank you for your time and cooperation.

I will be sending home a form for those parents who said they are able to drive and help out at the Farm Safety day on April 30th.  Please fill out the forms and return as soon as possible.

We have been doing a significant amount of writing in class.  I will be sharing some of these with you during conferences.

Last week I posted information regarding study guides.  It stated:

I am trying something new with the study guides for tests since it seems as if some students are still not taking home study guides.  It is very important that parents are involved in the process of helping your child with study skills also along with school.  WHEN THERE IS AN UPCOMING TEST A STUDY GUIDE IS DONE IN CLASS. STUDENTS WILL TAKE IT HOME AND IT NEEDS TO BE SIGNED THAT NIGHT BY A PARENT.  THIS SHOWS THAT YOU AS THE PARENT ARE MAKING A CONSCIOUS EFFORT IN HELPING YOUR CHILD SUCCEED.  IF IT IS NOT SIGNED I WILL TAKE PART OF YOUR CHILD'S RECESS AWAY SO PLEASE DO NOT TURN  THEM WHEN THEY ASK FOR HELP WITH THEIR STUDY GUIDE.  I AM ASKING YOU HELP IN GUIDING YOUR CHILD.  THANK YOU

WE ARE ALSO 1/2 WAY THROUGH THE THIRD QUARTER OF THIRD GRADE.  IT IS YOUR CHILD'S RESPONSIBILITY TO BE SURE THEY ARE KEEPING UP WITH ALL OF THEIR WORK AND WRITING IN THEIR PLANNER EVERY MORNING.  IF THEY DO NOT FINISH AN ASSIGNMENT IT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN HOME AND TURNED IN THE FOLLOWING DAY.  LATE WORK PASSED A DAY WILL NO LONGER BE ACCEPTED.  IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS ARE BECOMING MORE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN WORK AND ACTIONS.  PLEASE INSTILL IN YOUR CHILD BY HELPING THEM TO BECOME MORE RESPONSIBLE.

Thank you for your time and God Bless

Dear Parents,
It’s that time again!!! International Night is back on the calendar.  The Third grade is responsible for the country of BRAZIL.  International Night will be held on Tuesday, February 10th in the school Cafeteria at 6 pm.  I would like you to work with your child in gathering information about BRAZIL.  When you have collected the information you need, you and your  child will put it together and return it to school.  Here are several guidelines and suggestions.
·      Items should be posted on the paper provided.
·      There needs to be nine to ten sentences about the topic.  If your child chooses to do more that is acceptable.  I would encourage your child to put the sentences into their own words. They need to write in their best handwriting. (This is not to be written in cursive).
·      Your child may choose to illustrate a part of their topic.  Pictures from the Internet are acceptable and encouraged.
If you have anything at home you may bring it in on the day of International Night.  Your child will be receiving a Social Studies/Effort grade on this project.  I would like this project turned in by Friday, February 6th.
If you would like to help we will need volunteers to help with cooking the food and help on the afternoon of the 10th to set up. Pleased let me know if you would like to help.

Thank you for your help and cooperation.

Mrs. Bliss

Your child is responsible for the information about ___________________________________________in BRAZIL.
